01 | Project Background: Reliable Power for Large-Diameter Pipeline Welding

At a remote oil and gas pipeline repair site, the crew used a Xionggu 380V automated welding system for induction preheating, fill and cap welding, and grinding.

The multi-torch welding system operates at power levels reaching tens of kilowatts, while induction preheating requires substantial power over short periods. These processes demand reliable three-phase power and the ability to handle changing loads.

Traditionally, diesel generators supply power directly to welding equipment. However, fluctuating loads and extended operating hours can increase fuel consumption and operating costs.

To improve energy efficiency without compromising welding operations, the project team introduced SOFIMO PS-5060PV industrial battery storage units alongside its existing diesel generators.

02 | On-Site Application: 50kW Battery Power for 380V Automated Welding

Three PS-5060PV units were deployed, each delivering 50kW of rated AC output with a 59.9kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, supporting three-phase 380V industrial equipment.

During construction, the PS-5060PV supplied power for induction preheating, multi-torch automated fill and cap welding, and associated grinding operations.

With its high-power AC output and capacity to accommodate varying equipment loads, the PS-5060PV supports demanding industrial applications beyond the capabilities of many smaller battery power systems.

Under actual site conditions, a fully charged unit could support multiple complete pipe-joint welding cycles. The crew coordinated equipment use and recharging according to welding progress and remaining battery capacity.

03 | Hybrid Power Supply: Improving Diesel Generator Efficiency

The project adopted a hybrid configuration in which diesel generators recharged the PS-5060PV units, while the battery systems supplied power directly to welding and auxiliary equipment.

This arrangement separated generator charging from fluctuating welding loads, allowing the crew to schedule recharging around construction activities and helping reduce prolonged low-load generator operation.

Designed for demanding outdoor environments, the PS-5060PV also features a rugged industrial enclosure with an IP54 protection rating, providing protection against dust ingress and water splashes.

04 | Project Results: High-Power Welding with Approximately 30% Lower Fuel Costs

The three PS-5060PV units successfully supported the 380V automated welding system throughout key pipeline repair operations, including induction preheating and multi-torch welding.

Each unit’s 50kW output and 59.9kWh battery capacity enabled multiple welding cycles per charge, with diesel generator charging supporting continued operation.

Based on the project team’s comparison of conventional diesel-generator power and the hybrid battery storage configuration, annual fuel costs are projected to decrease by approximately 30%.

Reduced diesel consumption may also help lower associated carbon emissions, aligning with the growing demand for energy-efficient, lower-emission construction practices.

For pipeline contractors, this approach provides a practical way to meet high-power welding requirements while improving fuel efficiency and managing long-term operating costs.

05 | Proven Industrial Experience for Demanding Jobsites

SOFIMO Power has extensive experience in industrial portable power solutions, with proven applications in oil and gas pipelines, industrial maintenance, municipal repairs, and tunnel construction.

The successful deployment of the PS-5060PV in large-diameter pipeline welding demonstrates SOFIMO’s expertise in high-power industrial energy storage.

Combining in-house engineering with real-world project experience, SOFIMO delivers battery power solutions tailored to equipment loads, operating environments, and on-site charging requirements.
