Industry: Oilfield Services | Application: Field Pipeline Repairs | Equipment: Multiple SOFIMO Welding Integrated Portable Power Station ES-5000PLUS Units

Pipeline repair crews need welding power where the work happens. When repair locations are spread along a pipeline, getting personnel and tools into position is only part of the job. Power needs to reach each work area, too.

On an oilfield pipeline repair project in northwestern China, multiple SOFIMO ES-5000PLUS units were deployed near pipe joints to support field welding. With unpaved access and separate work locations, the crew used battery-powered equipment to organize welding power around the task.

Independent Power for Separate Work Areas

Coordinating pipeline repairs involves more than choosing a capable welder. Crews also need to allocate equipment across different joints, personnel, and stages of work.

Each ES-5000PLUS combines battery storage and a welding power source in one unit. With sufficient charge, it can supply welding power independently of a mains connection.

Deploying multiple units gives crews the flexibility to assign equipment to individual work areas, reducing the need to repeatedly move a shared power source between tasks. It also provides the power infrastructure for concurrent work where the schedule and site procedures allow.

Position the power around the work, with each unit supporting its assigned task.

Bring Welding Power Closer to the Joint

Field repairs rarely offer the convenience of a fixed workshop. Electrical infrastructure serving production equipment may not provide a suitable connection near the repair location.

On this project, the ES-5000PLUS units position on the ground and connected to the work through welding leads. Battery operation reduced the need to route long mains supply cables from distant distribution points.

The wheeled chassis and push-pull handles allow repositioning where access and ground conditions permit. As assignments change, crews can move the power source to suit the next work area.

Welding and Tool Power in One Unit

A pipe joint involves more than arc-on time. Joint preparation, grinding, and inspection support all contribute to the workflow.

Welding Integrated Portable Power Station SOFIMO ES-5000PLUS offers an adjustable 10–200 A welding current range, together with up to 5,000 W of AC output for compatible grinders, lighting, and other equipment.

Welding and AC output can operate simultaneously within the system’s specified load limits. For crews using multiple units, this provides a way to organize both welding and auxiliary power locally, reducing the need for separate tool power supplies.

One unit supports multiple tasks. Multiple units support work along the pipeline.

13.69 kWh of Energy for the Planned Workload

Equipment needs to arrive with enough energy for its assignment.

The ES-5000PLUS incorporates a 13.69 kWh NCM lithium battery with automotive-grade cells. Approximately 242 electrodes of 3.2 mm diameter per full charge, providing a basis for estimating workload and planning recharging.

With several units available, crews can allocate equipment according to welding demand, auxiliary loads, and remaining charge. Units can then be rotated or recharged around the work schedule.

When Welding Pauses, There Is No Engine to Idle

Pipeline repair work includes natural pauses for fit-up, weld inspection, coordination, and handovers.

If an engine-driven power source remains running during those intervals, it continues to consume fuel and produce engine noise and exhaust.

Welding Integrated Portable Power Station has no combustion engine to keep idling. When welding stops and no auxiliary loads are connected, energy consumption is limited to the unit’s own standby systems, such as controls and cooling.

Fewer Engine Maintenance Tasks Across the Fleet

Managing several power sources also means managing their upkeep.

With no combustion engine, Welding Integrated Portable Power Station SOFIMO requires no engine oil changes, oil-filter replacements, or fuel-system servicing. It also eliminates on-site refueling of the power source during battery operation.

Routine care remains necessary, including battery management, cable and connector checks, and cooling-system cleaning. For teams operating multiple units, removing engine-related service tasks simplifies one part of equipment preparation and maintenance.

Battery operation also avoids engine exhaust and engine noise at each powered work location, while welding fumes and tool noise remain part of normal site management.

Power That Fits the Repair Workflow

This project demonstrates how multiple ES-5000PLUS units can fit into field pipeline repairs: positioned near the joints, allocated across separate work areas, and used to support both welding and compatible tools.

The value extends beyond striking an arc. It includes flexible equipment placement, no engine idling during inspection breaks, and fewer engine maintenance tasks between assignments.
