Project Background | Temporary Power Challenges in Underground Construction

Nanjing Metro Line 5 spans approximately 37.4 km, with 30 underground stations along its entirely underground route.

During rail construction, equipment installation, and maintenance, power tools such as angle grinders, rotary hammers, and welding equipment require reliable electricity. However, long construction routes, scattered work areas, and frequently changing jobsite locations make temporary power distribution increasingly challenging.

Similar conditions exist in the Nanjing Yangtze River Crossing Tunnel, where road breaking and localized repairs require power at different locations as maintenance progresses.

The challenge is not simply providing enough power, but delivering it efficiently to wherever the work is taking place.

Limitations of Conventional Power Supply

Underground construction typically relies on fixed temporary distribution systems, with cables extending from distribution panels to individual work areas. Diesel generators may also be used in certain situations.

However, these methods present several challenges:

Long Cable Runs: Work areas far from distribution points require additional power cables, increasing material and installation costs.

Frequent Relocation: As construction progresses, cables must be repositioned, collected, and redeployed, adding labor and setup time.

Underground Restrictions: Diesel generators produce exhaust emissions, noise, and heat, requiring careful consideration of ventilation and jobsite safety requirements.

The Cost of Long-Distance Cabling

Consider a work area located 500 meters from the nearest power distribution point.

Assuming an indicative copper power cable price of RMB 40–60 per meter, the cable alone could cost approximately RMB 20,000–30,000 (500 m), excluding distribution equipment, cable protection, installation, and labor.

Note: This is an illustrative cost estimate, not actual expenditure from Nanjing Metro Line 5. Cable specifications, conductor size, and installation requirements vary depending on electrical load, voltage drop, and applicable safety standards.

For underground projects where work areas continuously move forward, the distance between the power source and the jobsite can be just as important as the power capacity itself.

Real-World Applications | From Rail Installation to Tunnel Repair

01 | Nanjing Metro Line 5: Mobile Power for Rail Construction

Equipment: PS-4800 Industrial Portable Power Station | Power Output: AC 220V / 3500W

Workers carrying out track construction with PS-4800 in Nanjing Metro tunnel

During rail construction on Nanjing Metro Line 5, the PS-4800 was deployed near active work areas to supply temporary electricity for angle grinders, rotary hammers, and other power tools.

Instead of continuously extending cables from distant distribution panels, workers could relocate the power station as construction advanced.

On-Site Benefits

By bringing power closer to the work area, the PS-4800 reduced reliance on long temporary cable runs and simplified power setup during relocation.

For rail installation projects involving continuous movement along underground routes, this approach provides greater flexibility and reduces the time spent preparing temporary electrical connections.

02 | Nanjing Metro Line 5: Portable Power for On-Site Welding

Equipment: SOFIMO PS-5800PRO + LW-170 (AK-170) 48V DC Welder | Power Capacity: 5kW / 5kWh

On-site welding with PS-5800PRO and LW-170 in Nanjing Metro Line 5

During metro installation and maintenance, welding tasks involving brackets, metal structures, and other components are often spread across multiple locations, sometimes far from fixed power distribution points.

At the project site, the PS-5800PRO industrial portable power station was paired with the LW-170 low-voltage DC welder to support mobile welding operations.

The equipment could be relocated between welding points without repeatedly installing long temporary power cables for small, scattered welding tasks.

On-Site Benefits

Deploying the power station and welding equipment directly at the work area reduced cable setup requirements and simplified relocation between welding locations.

This configuration is particularly suitable for distributed welding tasks, localized metal repairs, and maintenance operations in underground environments.

03 | Nanjing Yangtze River Crossing Tunnel: Road Breaking & Localized Repairs

Equipment: PS-5800PRO Industrial Portable Power Station | Rated Output: 5000W | Battery Capacity: 5kWh | Application: Electric Demolition Hammers & Road Breaking Tools

During road maintenance inside the Nanjing Yangtze River Crossing Tunnel, workers needed to break and remove sections of damaged pavement before carrying out repairs.

As shown in the project photos, workers operated electric demolition hammers while the PS-5800PRO was positioned directly beside the work area, supplying AC power to the tools.

With a 5kW rated output, the PS-5800PRO can power compatible high-demand construction tools, while its 5kWh battery capacity supports localized road-breaking and intermittent maintenance operations. Actual runtime depends on tool power consumption and operating conditions.

Unlike conventional setups requiring cables from distant distribution points, the portable power station can be moved as repair work progresses, reducing the need for repeated cable installation.

As a battery-powered system, it also produces no on-site fuel combustion emissions, helping avoid additional exhaust-related ventilation demands in enclosed underground environments.

On-Site Benefits

Power Where It’s Needed: 5kW output supports compatible demolition tools directly at the work area, reducing long cable runs.

Easy Relocation: The power station can move between repair locations as work progresses.

Cleaner Working Environment: No on-site fuel combustion emissions or diesel engine noise during operation.

For localized tunnel repairs involving intermittent tool operation and frequently changing work locations, the PS-5800PRO offers a practical alternative to conventional temporary power arrangements.

Project Results | Power That Moves with the Job

From rail installation and distributed welding on Nanjing Metro Line 5 to road breaking inside the Nanjing Yangtze River Crossing Tunnel, these projects demonstrate a common advantage of industrial portable power stations:

Delivering reliable power to remote and frequently changing work areas without extensive temporary cabling.

Jobsite Application Conventional Power Supply Mobile Power Solution
Rail Installation Fixed Distribution + Temporary Cables PS-4800 Deployed Near Work Areas
Distributed Welding Temporary Cabling + Welding Equipment PS-5800PRO + LW-170
Road Breaking Remote Power Connection or Diesel Generator PS-5800PRO + Electric Demolition Hammer
Frequent Relocation Repeated Cable Installation and Removal Power Station Moves with the Job

Industrial portable power stations are not intended to replace the entire temporary electrical distribution system of an underground construction project.

Instead, they complement conventional infrastructure.

Fixed distribution systems continue to support large-scale, continuous power demands, while industrial portable power stations serve distributed, intermittent, and frequently relocated work areas.

By combining these approaches, contractors can reduce unnecessary temporary cabling, simplify jobsite power deployment, and improve working conditions in underground construction environments.

Less Cabling. Faster Setup. Power Wherever the Job Takes You.
