Petrochemical Pipe Rack Maintenance: Bringing Welding Power to the Point of Work

Industry: Petrochemical | Application: Elevated Pipe Rack Maintenance | Product: SOFIMO Welding Integrated Portable Power Station ES-5000PLUS

With maintenance personnel working on an elevated pipe rack, welding power was supplied from ground level. In this petrochemical maintenance project, the SOFIMO Welding Integrated Portable Power Station ES-5000PLUS was deployed alongside the work area to support on-site welding.

Access conditions varied along the pipe rack, from paved areas to unpaved ground beneath the structure. For the crew, getting personnel and tools into position was only part of the preparation. Bringing a suitable power source close to the repair location mattered just as much.

Bring the Power Source to the Repair Point

Pipe rack maintenance takes crews beyond a fixed workshop. Even within a facility with established electrical infrastructure, a suitable power connection may not be conveniently located near the job. Routing long supply cables also requires coordination around access routes, existing equipment, and other site activities.

On this project, the ES-5000PLUS was positioned at ground level near the pipe rack. Its integrated battery and welding power source allowed equipment placement to follow the repair location, reducing dependence on distant power distribution points.

The wheeled chassis and push-pull handles supported repositioning where access conditions allowed, giving the crew more options for arranging the work area.

Ground-Level Power for Elevated Work

Keeping the power station on the ground meant the crew did not need to move the main unit onto the elevated work platform. Equipment checks, output adjustments, and repositioning could be handled at ground level while maintenance work took place above.

Welding leads still needed to be routed to the work area, but the power station could be positioned nearby within the permitted setup area.

Battery-powered operation provides welding power without a fuel-powered generator or a long mains supply cable running to the unit. This simplifies the power supply arrangement while retaining the welding connections required for the job.

Battery Capacity to Support the Planned Workload

Moving equipment and arranging recharging both take time when repair locations are spread along a pipe rack. Battery capacity therefore matters alongside welding output.

The SOFIMO Welding Integrated Portable Power Station ES-5000PLUS incorporates a 13.69 kWh battery. Product reference data indicates a welding capacity of approximately 242 electrodes of 3.2 mm diameter per full charge, providing a basis for planning welding tasks and recharging intervals.

An adjustable 10–200 A welding current range allows output to be selected for the welding procedure and workpiece requirements.

These specifications give maintenance teams a way to assess the unit against their planned workload, rather than relying solely on access to fixed electrical infrastructure.

Welding and Auxiliary Power in One Unit

Pipe rack maintenance can also involve grinding, cutting, and task lighting. Alongside its welding output, the ES-5000PLUS provides up to 5,000 W of AC power for compatible tools and equipment.

It supports simultaneous welding and AC output within the specified operating limits. For tasks involving angle grinders, lighting, or other suitable equipment, this allows one power station to serve both welding and auxiliary power needs, reducing the need for separate power sources.

This capability extends the unit’s role beyond welding and makes it relevant to the supporting work around a repair.

Power That Follows the Maintenance Task

This project illustrates the ES-5000PLUS’s role in petrochemical maintenance: bringing battery-powered welding closer to the repair point while keeping the main unit accessible at ground level.

Its wheeled construction, integrated energy storage, and combined welding and AC outputs give crews a flexible way to organize power around the work—not just around the nearest electrical connection.
